We, the undersigned, wish to register our opposition to the proposal to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the site of the former Kirkland Farm in Ballingry, Fife which forms part of the Benarty Area of Fife Council.
Our objections to the proposal are as follows.
- The facility will present a danger to the residents of Benarty on the grounds of fire hazards with lithium-ion batteries, with many fires reported worldwide.
- There are health hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries and there are ethical concerns about the sourcing of the lithium.
- There are environmental fears on the grounds of the contents of the batteries and their affect on the environment in the case of chemical leaks.
- There are environmental fears on the decommissioning of the batteries and the unknown elements for such a major task containing unidentified risks and, currently, no known decommissioning plan in place.
- There are social concerns on the loss of the area to the community, particularly in connection with Benarty’s Local Place Plan.
- There are concerns about the amount of energy projects within the vicinity.
We request that any and all planning applications for a BESS on the above site be rejected.
